Day 19 - June 20, 2012
Glendale, AZ to Las Cruces, NM
400 miles

I slept like a baby at Larry Tankís house and woke up at 0420. He had prepped the coffee pot before we hit the rack, so I fired it up.

It was a chilly 81 degrees this morning and after his lovely wife fixed us breakfast, it was time to make my way eastward.

The air was filled with haze from what I heard was the ďPacoĒ fire which had burned 4K acres. I donít know where it was, but the visibility was significantly reduced from what I had observed yesterday.

I went around Phoenix on the 101 bypass and if I have ever seen that much traffic before, I canít recall where it was. It moved along pretty swiftly, but I sure donít like being in the middle of it. Once I hit my eastbound exit to Hwy 60 and headed away from the city it got much better. The poor working stiffs headed west to get to the salt mines didnít look like they were faring so well.

After almost 400 miles in 100+ degree heat I stopped at Barnettís Harley Davidson in Las Cruces, NM. I needed a bulb that had burned out on one of my passing lamps and although I had consumed gallons of water, I was parched. The first person I saw at the dealership, Lorna, got me a big cup of ice water as they didnít have any in bottles. After a couple of refills, I felt much better and told her Iíd make her famous by giving her honorable mention here.

I thought about pressing on to El Paso, but decided to stay in town and wash clothes, partake of some golden throat dust remover and ponder where I will end up tomorrow.
